Facing a dire dilemma he fails to execute a guilty partisanka; later being tormented by Maria, his secret
love, dying in his arms, as a consequence of his incompetence. He is brought to trial for treason but
rescued from the firing squad by Yerina using her significant influence. Both have changed considerably
